Potential Future Weight Loss Drugs

Tesofensine is an experimental obesity medication currently entering into stage 3 trials (late 2009). It is among others currently in the mix for becoming a new weight loss drug. Tesofensine however promising is currently behind in its research and testing than others such as QnexaŽ, ContraveŽ and Lorcaserin. This does not necessarily make it out of the running for a good product and there seems to be a lot of room for medications that fight obesity given the overwhelming support for current ones.

Tesofensine works on the brain to suppress ones appetite. It was originally being produced to treat Parkinson's and Alzheimer's but during those tests was found to be a weak drug for those diseases but caused its patients to significantly lose weight. Thus the study of Tesofensine as an obesity drug started and the tests that proceeded confirmed its use as a weight loss drug would be the best way to go. Some patients losing upto 28lbs or over 10% of their body weight in 6 months. This is about double what patients on currently used Sibutramine have lost and effective at low doses. Some of the side effects reported with Tesofensine have been dry mouth, constipation, insomnia and others, but no major concerning problem side effects are reported.
However what needs to be emphasized here is that Tesofensine, although it looks good in initial and stage 2 tests, still has to go though the hardest and much more in-depth stage 3 testing. The Stage 3 testing for Tesofensine has been reported to take place over one year with just over close to 5700 patients. It will be interesting to see how the results pan out, will it be the 'miracle drug' its makers hope for? Will it be accepted but with limited use or will its side effects outweigh its benefits and be scraped in the Weight Loss Drug graveyard along with others. Stage 3 trials will give the medication a clearer picture for the FDA to consider it as a potential future medication.
