QnexaŽ

In the constant battle on obesity comes a new diet medication in the making called QnexaŽ from Vivus. QnexaŽ is actually a trial medication that consists of two existing medications. It is a mixture of Phentermine which currently is a medication for obesity and Topiramate or brand name TopamaxŽ which is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat epilepsy, anti-depressant or to treat migraines. However it is mixed in such a way that it comes in a once a day form and behaves differently than one might expect by combining these drugs.

QnexaŽ has shown good results in its clinical trials and its side effects seem acceptable. This is important if this medication is ever to make it pass the FDA. The FDA has in the past rejected weight loss medications due to adverse side effects, something that seems to be on everyone's minds with the approval of any diet drug. In one trial with QnexaŽ, over 3700 people where given varying amounts of the drug and all showed significant weight loss. The group taking the smallest amount lost 5% of their body weight, the intermediate group lost 10% and the group taking the most lost 15% or upto 37lbs. But what was promising is that in this test group no serious side effects where reported. Some of the side effects that where reported by some individuals where dry mouth, insomnia, constipation and other what is considered to be minor side effects.
It has been reported that Vivus hopes to file QnexaŽ with the FDA by the end of the year (2009). If so, the FDA will then decide whether the testing is sufficient, the product effective enough, and the side effects are low enough along with other issues. There is no promise if this medication will ever make it to market or if this medication will be prescribed to any one individual desiring to take it eventually. Everyone's body chemistry reacts differently so side effects vary from person to person and there could be additional warnings and product interactions with other medications.
