As with other prescription medications, precautions should be taken while using Meridia. Meridia can cause unwanted and potentially dangerous side effects, and patients should understand what they need to watch for.
All patients taking Meridia should visit their doctor regularly. This will ensure close monitoring of the patient's progress while taking Meridia, and ensure that adverse side effects are kept to a minimum. Any increases in heart rate or blood pressure can be assessed and adjustments of Meridia doses can be made.
If a patient is dissatisfied with their weight loss progress, they should discuss their concerns with a doctor. A patient should never increase Meridia dosage or the frequency of dosage without first be advised to do so by a doctor.
Never take Meridia while taking a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, or within two weeks of have taken a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor, such as phenelzine, furazolidone, procarbazine, selegiline or tranylcypromine. Doing so may cause profound, dangerous health conditions, such as severe seizures, dangerously high blood pressure or serotonin syndrome - a life threatening condition.
Patients are advised to avoid drinking excessive quantities of alcohol while taking Meridia.
Always consult a doctor if any side effects occur while taking Meridia, such as hives, skin rash or other allergic symptoms.
Possible side effects of Meridia include dizziness, drowsiness and hapered judgment. Always take Meridia for a few days before engaging in any activity requiring alertness, judgment or motor coordination, such as operating motor vehicles, operating machinery or other potentially dangerous activities.
Meridia frequently causes dryness of the mouth. If this effect persists for over two weeks, consult a doctor. Temporary relief from dryness of the mouth can be found in sugarless gum or candy, melting ice chips in the mouth, or by using a saliva substitute. If is important to manage this side effect, as excessive dryness of the mouth can lead to increased incidence of dental disease, such as tooth decay, gum disease and fungal infections.
